This week-long session is for high school students interested in exploring a variety of areas in science, including biofuels, disease, forensics, stem cells and much, much more. The program is open to 60 Contra Costa high school students entering 11th and 12th grades in the fall who have taken Biology and who successfully complete the on-line registration form.
The session runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily from Monday, July 11 through Friday, July 15. Participating students will learn the latest in research and biotechnical application from key scientists in the local area through morning lectures and interactive discussions.
Daily assignments will be given. The first two afternoons of the Summer Science Camp, students will spend their time doing hands-on work including laboratory experiences with DNA extraction, biofuels, and protein structure and synthesis. Groups of 15 students will spend Wednesday and Thursday afternoons visiting the state-of-the art work sites including Joint Genome Institute and John Muir Labs, to mention a few.
High school students selected for this one-week summer science opportunity will have access to CalState-East Bay, Concord Campus, industry experts and education and training institutions--all as they have fun exploring the biotechnical sciences.
This program is for entering eleventh and twelfth grade students with good academic standing and an interest in finding out more about the emerging field of Biotechnology.
