What is the Summer Camp? Program activities include five days of fun-focused learning which includes:

Day 1: Energy Generation & Control
Explore the design and installation of alternative energy sources including solar, wind and hydro-electrical systems. Learn how these and traditional electrical sources are captured and controlled through a delivery network. Visit the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Training Center to find out more about high-tech careers from data technician to electrician to lineman. Experience hands-on learning opportunities and demonstrations. Students will also discuss the importance of "soft skills" in this industry.

Day 2: Design & Architecture
Students will learn from experts about architectural space, form, scale, structure and materials. You will learn about analytical & spatial dynamics, utilize blue prints, transform structures from two- to three-dimensions, and find out about the importance of strength-to-weight principles. A blend of hands-on, computer and actual bridge building will be featured.

Day 3: Manufacturing
Manufacturing-Spend a full day at one of Contra Costa's premiere manufacturing firms and learn about the importance of safety in the workplace, motors and circuits; hydraulics; machine design and computer assisted drafting; material movement systems (rail, sea, and road); process control; and talk with workers about how their company provides continuous learning opportunities on and off the job.

Day 4: Construction
"Yeah, I built that!" That's what students will say after this exciting learning experience. Develop an appreciation for the magnitude of the construction industry and the central role that this sector plays in the health of the local economy. You will also climb aboard earth movers, cranes and other large construction vehicles while exploring the world of operating engineers. This day will also include a field visit at a local construction site.

Day 5: Career Pathways
The last day of camp includes the review of students' career survey on interests. Also discussed will be impact of the changing workplace and exploration of the variety of career and college major options available in engineering, construction and manufacturing. Labor market trends and career research are covered as well as identification of skill sets and transitions that are possible from high school into post-secondary education, training and careers. A series of workshops will be provided to allow information exchange from workers in these career fields. Exhibitors will share information about the continuum of education that extends from entry-level jobs to apprenticeship programs and higher education options. The week-long camp will conclude with a culminating event and celebration.

Camps are made possible by a consortium of industry, high school, and community college partners, including the Contra Costa County Office of Education, Contra Costa Community College District, CSUEB - Concord Campus, and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership.
